About Vat Savitri Vrat Katha
Vat Savitri Vrat Katha is a traditional Hindu fasting ritual Celebrated by married women in some parts of India. This Vrat is celebrated on the Amavasya (new moon) day in the month of Jyeshtha (June). This Vrat is dedicated for the Goddes Savitri, Who is considered the epitome of a devoted wife.
The Vat Savitri Vrat is based on the Legend of Savitri and Satyavan mentioned in the Hindu epic, the Mahabharat. According to the story, Savitri was a princess who choose Satyavan as her Husband. However, In the story predicted that Satyavan would die within a year of their Marriage.
On the destined day, When Satyan was to die, Savitri followed her husband into the forest. She prays to the God of Death, Yama, to spare her husband’s Life. Yama has been impressed by her Devotion and determination. And Yama gives her a blessing and her husband’s life back.
She was so happy when the Yama gave her husband’s life back. The Story of Savitri’s Devotion and the power of her prays became a symbol of an ideal wife’s love for her husband.
On the day of Vat Savitri Vrat, the married women comply with a day-long fast and perform rituals for well being and long life of their husbands. They wake up early in the morning, takes a bath, and wear new traditional clothes. After that, they visit their nearby Vat (Banyan) tree, which represents the sacred tree under which Savitri prayed for her husband’s life.
Women bind a sacred thread around a Vat (Banyan) tree and pray for their husbands. They also Pradakshina (circumambulation) of the tree when they pray. This act symbolizes their strong devotion and the strength of their marital bond.
After that, the women listen to or read the Vat Savitri Vrat Katha (the story of the legend of Savitri and Satyavan). The Vat Savitri Vrat Katha reminds them of Savitri’s Devotion and inspires him to express their love and care for their husband.
Throughout the day, women do a strict fast without taking water or food. In the evening, after the moonrise, they break their strict fast by consuming a meal. Some women receive Gifts from their husbands as a token of their dedication.
